We've all heard a good salesman can sell ice to Eskimos. Why would they want to do that? With a
target audience they can sell more with less effort! I know I would prefer more sales with less effort, wouldn't you? Who woudn't, right? Everyone loves the idea of "easy money".
Let me ask you this ... Do Eskimos have problems finding ice? Ummm, the answer of course is no, they have plenty of ice. Now the salesman that introduces "heated gloves" to those very same Eskimos is going to make lots more sales with lots less work. It's obvious as to why ... those poor Eskimos have cold hands. That's a problem for them that the heated gloves can solve. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it? Sure it does because that is the method to the madness.
A crowd with a problem in which you have a solution for, is your
target audience. It's a simple as that. It becomes even more effective when you can get as specific as possible. I'll share an example ... Sure all Eskimos can no doubt find heated gloves to be handy (no pun intended). Let's think of Eskimos that spends their day ice fishing, wow, now they need heated gloves! ... They would need them way more then Eskimos that bake cakes and cookies all day in a warm kitchen. So even though they are both Eskimos, one has a bigger problem with cold hands then the other.
As you search for your target audience, keep the Eskimos in mind. Now you can see how providing a solution for a problem to the right crowd will make all the difference. Do your research to understand who you are trying to sell to. The more you know, the more specific you can get, the more you will sell. Learning how to meet the needs of your
target audience will allow you to work smarter, not harder. Isn't that what it's all about?
